Plans are currently underway to redevelop the third and last site at CFB Calgary: the 200-acre (80.9 hectare) Currie Barracks site in Calgary, Alberta. While still based on the principles of smart growth and sustainable community design, the vision for Currie Barracks will build on Canada Lands Company’s previous experience in Garrison Woods and Garrison Green to create an even denser community with a richer mix of land uses, housing types, and servicing innovations to achieve a more complete community.
At full development, Currie Barracks is expected to accommodate approximately 3,000 housing units of various types, 200,000 ft2 ((18,580m2) of retail services in a mixed-use format, and 300,000 ft2 (27,871 m2) of office space.
Currie Barracks has received Gold Certification under the new LEED-ND (Leadership in Environmental and Engineering Design for Neighbourhood Development) for its approved plan – the first of its kind in Canada. It also contains the most significant concentration of provincially designated historic buildings and landscapes in an urban centre in Alberta.
Phase 1 of development, which will encompass approximately 33 acres, was initiated in May of 2008. Further site servicing in 2009 will permit the sale of product to the general public by an as yet to be selected multiple member builder group in late 2009. This phase will include approximately 100 townhouses, 125 single-family residences, and an apartment site. Most of the singles and townhouses will have a two-stall garage and the current intent is for the apartment project to have underground parking.

Chinook Winds
A chinook, or foehn wind, is a type of dry down slope wind which occurs in the lee of a mountain range. Chinooks can raise air temperature by up to 30 or 40°C for a few hours or days, after which the temperature returns to its base level. Winter Chinooks in Calgary often melt the snow covering the ground.
