In April of 2000, Canada Lands Company unveiled Garrison Square. Located in the heart of Garrison Woods, a 175 acre residential community on the east side of the former Canadian Forces Base in Calgary, Alberta, this park and monument is dedicated to the memory of the men and women of the CFB Calgary regiments.
The dedication ceremony theme for Garrison Square was Honoring the Past; Celebrating the Future. To mark the occasion, Canada Lands Company sponsored an essay contest with sixth grade students from nearby elementary schools. Participants were asked to write about the importance of remembering the contributions of the military in Calgary, and to suggest ways to honour those contributions. The two winners read their submissions at the dedication ceremony.
Calgary’s residents take pride in their city’s military heritage. CLC paid tribute to that heritage when the company built the commemorative park. In addition, the company took care to name surrounding residential streets after the World War I battles in which CFB Calgary's soldiers fought.
